Are you an alternative school?
We are a mainstream government school. Like other local government schools—such as Wonthaggi, Wonthaggi North, and San Remo Primary Schools—we are governed by the Department of Education. This means we have access to the same resources, and our policies and processes are aligned with those schools.
How will you cater to my child in a composite classroom?
Our teachers are highly experienced and teach students, not just year levels. This means children learn what they need to, regardless of their year level. Even in single-year-level classrooms, there is a range of learning abilities and needs. Our teachers use pre- and post-assessments, consider student interests, and plan curriculum across the whole school to better cater to all student abilities.
If there are only a small number of students in their year level, who will my child play with?
At Powlett River Primary School, recess and lunchtimes are a little different from larger schools. Students play what they want with whoever is playing that game, and often the whole school plays together. Students also enjoy helping with gardening projects or participating in lunchtime activities like water play, chalk drawing, bubbles, Lego, and nature mandalas. We find this fosters self-esteem and confidence, and students who transition to secondary school have a strong sense of identity.
How will my child cope at secondary school if they haven’t been to a large school before?
Historically, students at Powlett River Primary go on to be very successful at secondary school. For example, some of our Grade 6 students have successfully auditioned for Bass Coast College’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory performance. Many of our former students excel in music at secondary school due to our outstanding music program.
In a small school, students take on more responsibility, and our values of growth, individuality, and community help students develop a strong sense of self.
Bass Coast College has a comprehensive transition program, with additional support available if needed. As a small school, we have the flexibility to provide extra visits to secondary schools when required.
We also have strong relationships with Village High School and Newhaven College for students who transition to those settings.
Can I volunteer?
We love help from our community! There are many opportunities to get involved, including Breakfast Club, Walk to School, Morning Maths, and whole-school events like the Colour Fun Run. Helping with odd jobs or attending our working bees is always greatly appreciated.
All volunteers need a current Working with Children Check, which is free for volunteers.
What are the school fees?
All Victorian government schools ask for a voluntary contribution. Schools send this information to families and outline what the contribution goes toward. We greatly appreciate any contributions families can make. You can find our voluntary contribution information under the Enrollment tab.
Where do we buy the uniform?
We sell jumpers, polo shirts, and school dresses through our own uniform shop at the school. We also offer secondhand items for a gold coin donation. Black pants, shorts, skorts, and leggings can be purchased at other retailers like Kmart or Best and Less. If you are experiencing financial hardship, we can assist with purchasing uniform items.
Do you have lunch orders?
Lunch orders are available on Fridays. More details can be found on the Lunch Order page.
Do you have Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)?
Yes, our OSHC service is run by our School Council, allowing us to provide care that aligns with our school values and meets the needs of our community. Details about the service can be found under the Community tab.
