Week 7 and 8 Term 2

From our principal

Physical Education

I am delighted to announce that Beth Walker will be taking our students for PE on Mondays starting 15 June. Some of our senior students will know Beth as she also teaches physical education at Wonthaggi North Primary School and has invited our students to join their school for teams sport this year.  Beth is a highly skilled PE teacher and is warm and encouraging so she is the perfect addition to our school community. I know everyone will make her feel very welcome. Mrs Black will continue to coordinate our sports and district sports events.

Attendance

Attendance is an area the Department of Education is wanting schools to work on, and I can see why. On average students in Victoria are missing 25 days of school year. At Powlett River PS 61% of our students are absent 20 or more days a year, this is 20% higher than schools that are like us.

I know kids get sick, they have medical appointments and many families take holidays during school terms for a range of reasons, so my aim is to work on reducing our unexplained absences. This is to make sure that we support attendance at school before children become school can’t (school refusal). Our staff will be reaching out to you when there is an unexplained absence. This will help us to clearly identify the kids who need extra support with attendance. Then we can work together to help your child get to school.  If you want to let us know your child is absent you can contact the office, 56787240 or enter the absence in Compass. I can show you how to do it on Compass or if you need your password reset, please let me know.

Special Assembly 19 June

Ours student leaders will be presented with their badges at the assembly on Friday 19 June. This includes our school captains and junior school council. We hope you will join us in celebrating these outstanding school leaders.

Long Service Leave

I will be taking a few days long service leave, 12 – 17 June. Carla Golden will be the acting principal while I am away.

Bass Coast Shire

Izzy from the Bass Coast Shire came out to our school to teach our students about waste management.
We learnt all about our bin systems and what happens to our waste after we throw it away.
Thank you to Fletcher our super helper!
